Clowning 101: How To Do Clowning

Have you ever been doing something in your kitchen and all of a sudden a giddy feeling comes over you and you break out and start dancing? Leaving the other people around you looking at you like you have lost your marbles? Maybe you dance around the kitchen to music and act silly on a regular basis? I do this all the time! Maybe you are one of those people who crack jokes or talk to yourself when there is not really anyone around to hear you (My dad always said that this is fine as long as you don’t answer yourself!). This is perfectly normal and no you are not crazy or loony, you are just clowning around!

I have had many, many instances where I have been listening to music while doing something in the kitchen while my kids are sitting at the kitchen table doing their homework. All of a sudden I will break out and start to dance in a silly way or I sing in a funny way. My kids will most of the time look at each other and say “Mom’s going nuts again!” Sure they will say that but I know that they love it when I cut loose and act like a nut-bar. Their bright and smiling faces tell all.

It is actually very good for a person to cut loose like that once in a while. It feels great and if I were a doctor, I would recommend that everyone does this at least once a month! It’s not good for someone to take life so seriously all the time. You need to have time sometimes just to BE. To stop, breathe in the air, just enjoy being alive! Everyone has this zest for life inside of them; it doesn’t matter if you are the most cynical person in the world.  You can’t say that you don’t have your moments when you get that giddy feeling where you want to bust out in song or a two-step! If you didn’t have these moments, I would say that you are the one who is nuts or that you are in denial.

Everyone has the ability to be a clown inside of them; they just have to tap into that part of themselves, the “inner clown” so to speak. It’s all about knowing how to talk to kids, and knowing how to talk to kids means never really forgetting how to be a kid. Many adults when they grow up forget what it was like to be young and carefree.

We forget those long, sunny days spent playing in the sandbox or on the playground, being able to play with Barbie’s or trucks for hours on end. One of my best memories was spending the day swimming. I grew up literally in the water, from the time I woke up in the morning until the time it was time to come in and get ready for bed I was always found floating around down the hill from my granny’s house.

If you could throw off your trappings of adulthood for one day, what is it that you would most love to do again, if you just had one day as a child again? I am sure that it would be something that you haven’t done since you were a kid. Maybe go fire-fly catching or running through a swamp and catching frogs, maybe as mentioned earlier, you would like to play Barbie’s or with any other type of doll you were into as a kid, maybe you liked to have tea parties.
Even playing trucks or pretend construction, I know that was a lot of fun when I was a kid, we used to spend hours picking up and dumping sand in certain places of my granny’s yard. Boy she would get mad! This is what I mean though, all of your good memories that you have as a child will help you to tap into that “clown mode” when you need to.

Perhaps you have a child who is sick or who has hurt themselves or even wants to have a party. You could tap into that part of you and become a clown for your kid! Every child wishes that their parent could be fun like that and if you did that for your child; no doubt that they would think you were the absolute coolest mom or dad of all, if they don’t think so already! One day, you may even decide to make clownng a part-time or full-time career! The sky is the limit when you have humour and a round, red nose!
